...at least, that's what this blog was supposed to be called. But it's
amazing how many people already have some variation of Life in their blog name.
See, I've had this idea rolling around in my head for a while now to start a
blog about our family and I finally got my act together enough to do it.
It seems that this internet thing is really catching on and might be around for
a while, and because I've long since given up writing actual letters or email to
me is almost strictly for work, this seemed like the natural thing to do.
Like the kids say, everyone else is doing it so why can't we.
If you know anything about the blogosphere, you know the most
important piece of your blog is to have a really cool name. Well ok, not
really, but I did spend a lot of time figuring out a name for this blog.
It had to be something that captured the fullness of everything that goes on
with our family, because as anyone who knows us is well aware, A LOT happens in
our family: good, bad, happy, sad, serious, funny, beautiful and ugly.
That's when I figured it out. It's not obvious yet from
the title, but the secondary name of this blog is LIFE. Once I figure out how to modify the design of the title, the top of the page will look more like
this:
Lowes Island FEnnellys
Well, at least I thought it was pretty clever. And how appropriate that we should be
starting a new blog about life and our family, right when there happens to be
new life on the way. Please say hello to
Megan Marie Fennelly...
She’s beautiful and the kids and Ann Marie and I couldn’t be
more excited. She’ll be arriving in late
October but in many ways, she’s already here. Of course you always bond with your baby when they’re still in utero,
but this is the first time that we’ve started calling the baby by their name
this early on and it’s been amazing to see the effect it has on Erin and
Ryan. They already call her by her name
and talk to mommy’s belly and fight over who’s going to get to feed her and
take naps with her…everything except change her diaper, go figure. Sean is excited too as this can only result
in more craziness and chaos and running around the house and breakable things
getting dropped, all of which cause Sean to laugh hysterically, as if to say
“I’ve taught them all so well, I couldn’t be prouder!”. He’ll be a great big brother as always, and
I’m sure it wont be long before Megan figures out we really do have an angel
living with us.
So what’s the
point of this blog? How’s this all
work? Well, let me run through some
blogging basics as well as my vision for the blog and we’ll take it from there.
- This will be a way for Ann Marie and I to easily tell family and friends, as well as anyone else who happens to find this blog, all of the wonderful and crazy things going on in our family’s life. It’s better than email because things that get posted here will stay here so we’ll keep a running history for as long as we can.
- Blogs make it easy to organize posts by different categories to make them easy to look up later. So for instance, a post about the huge bruise on Ryan’s forehead that he got tonight when
he got clothes lined by a board chasing a ball, with a big picture of the bruise, would he saved in the category “Ryan” (and maybe the subcategory “Injuries”). You could come back to the blog later on and just look at “Ryan” posts to find the huge bruise picture. (Yes, he really did get a
huge bruise on his forehead tonight getting clothes lined by a board…No, I didn’t really take a picture of it for this blog………………yet).
- It’s easy to include pictures and video, so I’ll finally be able to make some use of the 5,236,397 pictures on my hard drive that I wasn’t sure what to do with.
- People can easily leave comments on each post instead of having to write an email or giving us a phone call. It will be fun to go back later on and read what people had to say (so choose your words carefully!).
- The crazy thing is, anyone can see it! I’m sure it will mostly be the family and friends we tell about it
that check it out, but if the reigning monarch of Kuala Lumpur wants to check out our blog and leave a comment, he can.
- There should be an RSS feed button on the front page of this blog somewhere that lets you subscribe to it. That means anytime something wonderful or crazy or unbelievable or sad happens in our family (that's just about every day!) and I get around to writing about it here, you'll know about it right away.
- This
gives me an creative outlet. At one
point, long, long ago, I used to be somewhat creative, especially with
writing. At least I think I was. Lately, I’ve had the urge to try and figure out if that was really true and see if there’s any magic still left. I can’t promise any magic on this blog, but I will try and promise at least 1 post a week.
- Occasionally I may expand the subject to be not just about what’s happening in my family, but when it makes sense, talk about the bigger picture as it relates to life…Ahhhh, now you get the whole Life theme thing, right? Again, as many of our friends and family know, this will usually happen in relation to something with Sean, as events related to him often get us thinking about life and how precious it is. But kudos to Megan, who gets the prize for kicking off the life them of this blog.
- Will all of my posts be this long?………………uh, no.
- Bear with me. I’m not really sure how this will go, I have to learn about blogging and a lot of writing rust to shake off, but I’ll give it my best shot. I’ve promised Ann Marie this is not something she will have to take care of and add to her already ridiculously long list of things to do.
- Sean’s caring bridge site is still active and right now, we have no plans to get rid of it. Ann Marie will probably keep updating that one and I’ll post my own thoughts on Sean here, but we might end up starting a separate blog for him over here on Typepad too.
There’s probably
more I could write, but 11 seems like a good place to stop. I’ll try adding some more pictures and
widgets and other cool things to this site over the next week or so. We’re actually on vacation right now so I
should have some good beach pictures to share soon. That’s all for now, good night!
